It tries to look like weaving — small, dense, dot-and-cross motifs built up in wax-resist to imitate the texture of ikat and hand embroidery, a trick that requires more precision than either technique it's faking, because a mistake in wax shows immediately where a mistake in thread might hide. It's considered one of the most technically demanding categories in the whole Javanese batik tradition for exactly that reason: virtuosity spent making one craft convincingly impersonate another.
