China Seas Wallpaper: Bali Isle - Custom Sapphire Ice on Almost White Paper

Bali Isle is the companion to Bali II and the sibling to Bali Hai, and if that sounds like a dynasty it should — this family of ikat patterns has been the China Seas answer to the question that every wallpaper client eventually asks, which is: how do I cover a room in pattern without the room becoming about pattern? The answer is wax-resist. Bali Isle takes the stylized botanical forms of Indonesian ikat and hand-screens them at a 25-inch repeat with the soft, feathered edges that come from a technique originally designed to let the dye decide where it stopped. Forty yards at 24” printed width is a full room — a generous bedroom, a powder room with enough left over to do the adjacent hall, or a dining room that will make the table look like it was chosen to match even if it wasn’t. Sapphire Ice on Almost White is the colorway that splits the difference between blue and the memory of blue. It is lighter than navy, cooler than periwinkle, and steadier than either — the color of a morning sky reflected in still water before anyone has walked past and disturbed it. Against the almost white ground the ikat forms read as atmosphere rather than decoration, and a room papered in this will feel larger rather than smaller, which is the trick that only the palest colorways of the best patterns can pull off.
