In the temple towns of Andhra Pradesh, artisans worked a sharpened bamboo point dipped in dyes boiled from indigo, pomegranate rind, and madder root, painting entire scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata onto cotton meant to hang behind an altar — gods, not gardens. The floral vocabulary arrived later, once Dutch and English traders started commissioning the same hands for bedcovers instead of scripture, and three thousand years of discipline simply got redirected toward what the ships wanted to carry home. This custom purple and lavender on ivory is a long way downstream of that original pen.
