Öz Beg Khan ruled the Golden Horde from 1313 to 1341, its longest reign, and under him the state reached its height and turned Muslim. The tribes under his rule came to be called Uzbeks, a ruler's name hardening into a people's name. Some scholars read it differently, as uzi bek, \"master of himself.\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThose people moved south into the oases. In 1500 an Uzbek leader, Muhammad Shaybani, took Samarkand from the Timurids, and by 1501 he held Bukhara, founding the dynasty that ruled there for a century. Cloth is the other thing the name is tied to. Margilan, in the Fergana Valley, was the old centre of atlas and adras, the silk ikats whose patterns are dyed into the threads before weaving. UNESCO put the Margilan centre on its register of good safeguarding practice in 2017.
