Before it was a pattern, it was contraband.
Les Indiennes — the Indian ones — were printed cottons that sailed in from India in the 1600s: light, washable, colored with madder root and indigo so the pattern held. France fell for them so hard that in 1686 the crown banned the whole trade — no imports, no copies, no wearing. Mostly, it made smugglers: the cloth ran in through Marseille and over from Holland, printers worked one step outside the border, and the wealthiest wore it in the open anyway. The ban lasted 73 years. The wanting lasted longer.
This is the wanting, still at work: eleven screens laid by hand, color over color, the old outlaw print gone respectable. Not soft, though.
Six yards in stock, one lot, 49 inches wide, hand-printed in the USA on cloth woven in Belgium. $168 a yard, down from $428.
