I am a trellis built from the absence of paint. The white bars that cross me on the diagonal are the cloth itself, left bare. The lime and green shapes are what grew in the gaps, each with its own dark seam and its own white nick, so no two diamonds quite agree and the eye keeps checking.
My repeat is seven inches: small enough to read as texture from across a room, and just large enough up close for you to find the nicks. Hung as Roman shades in a bay of windows, I turn the daylight the color of a lime in something cold. This green was requested by name, and I don't believe it has ever been asked to be subtle.
Arbre de Matisse, who hears everything, told me the best lattices are the ones where you can't tell whether the bars or the gaps are the design. I can't vouch for that. I can only say I haven't settled it either.
