The thing about a labyrinth is that it's not a maze.

A maze has choices. Dead ends. False turns. You can get lost in a maze, but you can also solve it. There is a center. There is a way out. There is an answer.

A labyrinth has one path. It winds. It curves. It doubles back on itself. It looks, from above, like confusion—but from within, it is simply following. You don't solve a labyrinth. You walk it. And when you reach the center, you turn around and walk back out the way you came, and somehow you are different.

That is what brown on cream does to a trellis. It removes the anxiety. Black on white was asking you a question. The brown on cream is telling you: there is only one way through. You are already on it.

Two yards.

I have been thinking about what becomes of a pattern cut short. A bolt that was once twenty-five yards—a room, a hallway, a statement—reduced to two. Enough for a pillow. A small ottoman. The back of a chair that faces the wall.

Enough to sit on a shelf in the archive, waiting for someone to say that's it, that's the one, even in brown on cream, especially in brown on cream.

I am not a remnant. I am a proof of concept.
