China Seas Fabric: Bali Hai - Custom Blue on Tinted Belgian Linen / Cotton

Bali Hai is the China Seas pattern that introduced a generation of designers to the ikat — and then refused to step aside for anything that came after it. The design translates the ancient Indonesian resist-dye technique into a large-scale vertical composition where diamond forms stack and merge, their edges feathered with the characteristic blurring that happens when threads are bound and dyed before weaving. In the originals, that soft edge is physics — the wax resist can't hold a perfect line, so color bleeds into color and every boundary breathes. China Seas reproduces that quality through screen printing, which is its own kind of discipline: using a precise process to faithfully capture something that was beautiful precisely because it wasn't precise.

This is a custom blue on tinted Belgian linen-cotton — and the listing warns you honestly: this is a very soft blue, lighter and more washed than the standard China Seas blues, closer to a faded indigo or a chambray that's been through a hundred summers.
