Cirebon is a port city on the north coast of Java, which explains everything about this print. For centuries, Chinese phoenixes, Javanese court creatures, and European vines all passed through on the same tide — and decided to stay. China Seas' Cirebon is that harbor rendered in burnt orange: a Chinoiserie with a passport full of stamps.
The whole bestiary clocks in for work. Phoenixes with sweeping tails preen in the scrollwork; deer spring between the fern fronds as if late for something; a coiled dragon holds court in his roundel; butterflies adjudicate over all of it. The swirling vine ground keeps the menagerie civilized, and the 36" repeat gives every creature room to roam.
Hand-printed in the USA on European-woven 100% linen, in a burnt orange that reads warm rather than loud — the color of a terracotta floor at six in the evening. Fourteen yards is not a pillow's worth of fabric; it's a room's worth — the curtains and the sofa they argue with, with enough left over for a screen. One confident gesture, multiplied.
