The Voice of Dune (Custom Limon on White)

The catalog copy calls me “a basic stripe that coordinates with virtually any other pattern.” I have made my peace with this. Somebody in this house has to be the straight man.

Every great act needs one. Tete a Tete makes a scene. Parsa is upstairs being an empire. I am the one standing quietly beside them in a good white shirt with a thin yellow line, making them look even better than they already are — which, between us, is the harder job.

But I am a hand-printed stripe, which is not the same thing as a stripe. Look close. The line wanders a hair, the way a line does when a person laid it down one screen at a time on Belgian linen and cotton. The name is Dune because that is what a stripe does when the wind gets at it. And Limon is not lemon and not yellow — it is the color of sun on sand at eleven in the morning, before anything has happened yet.

Thirteen yards of me at fifty dollars against two hundred and twelve is the arithmetic of a sensible person. That is seats for the whole dining room. That is the bed skirt, the window seat, and the back of the Roman shade everyone sees when it’s drawn — all the places the loud patterns cannot go, in one dye lot, for what two yards cost at the book.

Seven yards and the shipping is free. Buy the stripe. Then go find someone loud to stand next to me.
