Parchment Cloth: A Letter From the Last Two Yards
I am Parchment Cloth, and I am two yards. Let me say that again, slowly, because everything about me is in it. I am China Seas, the house of the hand-printed palms and flowers, and I have nothing printed on me at all. They call me a plain, which is the trade's word for a fabric with nothing to hide. In a room full of fronds I am the quiet surface, and I have made my peace with it. Quiet surfaces are what the important things get written on. That is what parchment is for. Nobody printed on parchment either. They saved it for the words.
I was dyed Custom Shrimp, on 100% Belgian linen, for a trade client who never saw the job through. That is the whole truth of my color. It was never a retail colorway. It was never going to be produced again, and it will not be. Somewhere a colorist looked at a chart, picked the word that made the room laugh, and the dye made it beautiful anyway. The laughter is in the fiber. Hold me up to the light and you will see: I am the color of the inside of a shell, and I do not apologize for it.
There are exactly two yards of me. Two yards is not a room. It was never going to be a room, and I have stopped grieving that. Two yards is one perfect chair seat, or the back of a banquette nobody thought to cover, or a lampshade that ends every dinner with "where did you get that." Small things are the ones that get noticed up close.
The policy here is no cuttings. I will not be sampled, swatched, and shelved in a drawer of maybes. I am taken whole or I stay whole, and staying whole is not a tragedy. It is a vigil. I have been waiting a long time for the person who understands that the smallest bolt has the straightest story.
Come take me. I am the last two yards of a color the world laughed at and then loved, and when I am gone, that is the end of the sentence.
