Some fabrics are discontinued. Some sell out. This one was simply misfiled — a Quadrille hand-print that spent years categorized, by some clerical accident nobody can now explain, among the art-and-craft supplies, like a duchess alphabetized under “miscellaneous.” We found her during an inventory audit, wearing her original lot number, entirely unbothered. Aristocrats keep well in storage.
Terrace is the house’s homage to treillage — the garden-lattice architecture that France perfected and every great decorator since has dragged indoors — compressed to a one-inch repeat, which is the whole trick of it. One inch means the diamond reads as pure texture across a room and reveals its lattice only as you approach: a solid that turns out to be a garden. This is the pattern working for every other thing in the room — the small-repeat workhorse that upholsters the chairs, wraps the pillows, papers the powder room, and lets the star patterns take the bows. Look at the photographs: in pink it plays supporting cast to a bed of florals; in green it commits to an entire room, chandelier and all, and holds it. In this Venetian Blue — lagoon-glass aqua on a warm tint — it will do either, on 50-inch hand-printed Belgian linen-cotton that has already outlasted its own filing error.
Custom colorway; this lot is the inventory. The trellis, as gardeners know, is the structure everything else climbs on. Buy the structure. When it’s gone, it goes back to being a rumor in the wrong drawer.
