China Seas Fabric: Bali Hai - Custom Sea Green on Tinted Belgian Linen / Cotton

Bali Hai is the China Seas pattern that launched a thousand Pinterest boards and not one of them captured what it actually does in a room. The ikat derives from the warp-dyed textiles of the Indonesian archipelago — cloth where the pattern is created in the tension between what the dyer intends and what the thread decides, and the resulting soft edges are not imprecision but negotiation. China Seas hand-screens that negotiation onto 53" Belgian linen-cotton with a 22¾-inch repeat, and the pattern has been specified by name in House Beautiful, Coastal Living, and Traditional Home because it does something almost no other large-scale print can do: it fills a window or covers a chair without ever raising its voice. Two yards is a pillow pair that will outperform everything else on the sofa.

Custom Sea Green on Tint is the colorway the others audition against. Fourteen versions of Bali Hai exist — turquoise, salmon, purple, blues, grays — and Sea Green is the one that keeps getting pulled from the memo sample. It is the green of shallow water over sand, warm enough to live with wood and cool enough to live with white, and against the tinted ground it produces the particular quality of looking like it has been in the room longer than anything else there.
