Indramayu — Custom Bali Blue on White
The pattern is named for a regency on the north coast of Java that has been producing batik since at least the thirteenth century - long before any European knew the word, let alone the process. The print itself is chinoiserie: dragons, deer, turtles, snakes, birds, the whole celestial menagerie of the Chinese zodiac rendered in a soft Bali blue that has no argument with anything. This is the kind of cultural triangulation that only happens in the textile trade, where a Javanese place name meets a Chinese iconographic tradition meets a Belgian linen-cotton ground meets a screen-printing facility in New Jersey, and nobody blinks. China Seas understood that the history of cloth is the history of people refusing to stay where they were born, and this pattern is the proof.
Twenty-seven yards at outlet price, 54" wide with a 27" repeat on a beautiful 55/45 linen-cotton blend woven in Belgium — a ground with real body and the kind of dry hand that gets better the longer you live with it. Enough yardage for curtains in a serious room, or upholstery on a pair of chairs that will quietly become the best thing in the house. The blue will read as neutral to anyone standing more than six feet away, and as a bestiary to anyone who sits down and looks.
