Alan Campbell Fabric: Kells II - Custom New Blue / Brown Dots on Tinted Linen / Cotton

This pattern is a basketweave lattice with dots — and naming it after the Book of Kells was not an accident. The monks at Kells filled every margin and inter-column space with interlocking geometric ornament so dense that the eye couldn’t rest, and then they dropped in circles and dots at irregular intervals to give you somewhere to land. Alan Campbell did the same thing in two screens: the blue-grey lattice does the work of structure, and the brown dots break the grid just enough to keep it from becoming wallpaper. The previous listing called it “a small-scale, modern, allover geometric print” and that sentence should be taken outside and left there.

The monks who illuminated the Book of Kells understood something about pattern that most modern textile designers have to rediscover the hard way: density needs punctuation. Alan Campbell’s Kells II is a tight basketweave lattice in faded blue on a tinted linen-cotton ground, and it would be merely good if it stopped there. The brown dots — hand-printed, slightly irregular, scattered through the weave like periods dropped into a run-on sentence — are what make it excellent. Three yards at 48.5” on Belgian-woven 55/45 linen-cotton is a pair of pillows, a small ottoman, or one chair seat that will make everything else in the room wonder why it’s trying so hard.

Custom New Blue is the color of blue that has already had its argument with grey and settled the matter privately. Against the tinted ground it reads as shadow rather than color — the lattice recedes, the dots advance, and the whole surface breathes without asking permission. The brown is not chocolate, not espresso, not any of the names that get assigned to browns that want to sound expensive. It’s the brown of an old binding on a book nobody has opened in the right amount of time.
