Bali Diamond

I am the simplest pattern in this room and the hardest one to ignore. A six-inch diamond, repeated in greys that shift from charcoal to smoke to ash across a tinted linen-cotton ground — and every edge deliberately blurred, because I am an ikat, and an ikat does not believe in straight lines. The technique is Indonesian: you dye the threads before you weave them, and the color bleeds where the bindings weren't quite tight enough, and that bleed is the design. Except I'm not woven in Bali. I'm hand-screen-printed in America on Belgian cloth, which means someone translated that controlled imperfection into ink and squeegee, one pass at a time, and made it look inevitable. My repeat is six inches vertical — the tightest geometry in the collection — which means I tile like architecture. Upholstery, curtains, pillows, a headboard: I go everywhere because I fight with nothing.

Four yards of 54-inch cloth. That's enough for a pair of dining chairs that will make everything else at the table look like it's trying too hard, or curtain panels for a window that deserves to be quieter than the view. Multi Greys on Tint is the colorway that works in the room you haven't designed yet — the one you're still arguing about with yourself at two in the morning. I settle that argument. I'm the grey that isn't cold, on a ground that isn't white, printed by hand in a way that means no two yards are exactly alike, which is the whole point of ikat and the whole point of me.
