China Seas Bali Hai - Custom French Blue on Tinted Linen

Ikat is one of those techniques where the blurriness is the point. The dye resists at the edges, the motif bleeds slightly into the ground, and what you get is a pattern that looks like it’s been through something - a long journey, several decades, at least one move across continents. This large-scale peacock ikat in French blue on a warm tinted Belgian linen has that quality. It doesn’t look new. It looks like it arrived.

The scale is generous - a 25” vertical repeat means these peacocks make their presence known. Two yards is an honest constraint: one serious ottoman, or two Roman shade panels for a smaller window, or a headboard for someone who understands that a bedroom should have a point of view. The 55% linen ground gives it enough structure to hold the large repeat without going slack.

French blue on tinted linen is a combination that has been working since the 18th century for the same reason it works now - the warmth of the ground keeps the blue from going cold, and the whole thing reads as considered rather than decorated.
