Edward Zajac and Richard Callahan understood that Chinoiserie was never really about China. It was about what the West imagined China to be—a dream of bamboo and latticework filtered through centuries of European longing. The duo became famous in the 1970s for rooms that piled pattern upon pattern with the confidence of people who knew exactly what they were doing: Zajac trained under Billy Baldwin, Callahan at Jansen and with Valerian Rybar. When they designed Shanghai for Quadrille, they stripped the Chinoiserie lattice to its graphic essence—interlocking fretwork that reads as geometry first, exoticism second. The pattern tiles seamlessly, creating the sense of a garden pavilion that extends beyond any wall's boundaries.
Sixty yards at 27" width and a 32" vertical repeat is a full room and then some—a powder room, a dressing room, an entry hall that announces intentions before the first word is spoken. The Melon/Pink colorway is not shy. It is coral and blush and the particular warmth of afternoon light through paper lanterns, handprinted in the USA on American-made paper. This is wallpaper for people who understand that "neutral" is not a compliment. Ships in rolls up to 25 yards, untrimmed, with join marks; five-yard minimum. When Zajac and Callahan designed a room, guests remembered it years later. Shanghai is how you get that kind of room.
