Batik gets its characteristic blurred edges and organic variations from the wax-resist dyeing process — fabric is covered with wax in the pattern areas, dipped in dye, then the wax is removed to reveal the protected ground color beneath, and the slight wax bleeding and cracking creates those soft boundaries that separate real batik from geometric prints trying to fake the effect. Macoco Reverse mimics that visual result through screen printing (faster, cheaper, infinitely repeatable) while keeping the pattern vocabulary rooted in Indonesian textile traditions: interlocking linear grids, alternating diagonal lines, the kind of geometric abstraction that works equally well in traditional batik sarongs or contemporary upholstery fabric. The "Reverse" designation means the standard colorway has been flipped — instead of dark pattern on light ground, you get light-reading pattern on darker ground, though "darker" here means soft Bali blue rather than navy or indigo, so the effect stays airy rather than dense. The 12-inch vertical by 13-inch horizontal repeat is compact enough to work on smaller upholstery pieces without requiring extensive pattern planning, and at 53 inches wide you get good coverage per yard with minimal selvage waste.
Bali blue on white is a custom colorway that won't match any other China Seas fabric carrying the Macoco name — designers ordering custom colors can choose whatever name they want for internal tracking, which means "Bali Blue" in this context is one client's specific shade request rather than a standardized Quadrille color code. The blue reads as soft and coastal without being pastel or washed-out, the kind of saturated-but-not-bright tone that works in beach houses without looking like you ordered "coastal chic" from a catalog. Hand-printed on Belgian linen-cotton blend (55% linen for texture and body, 45% cotton for workability and cost management), this has the weight for serious upholstery while the linen content prevents it from reading too flat or synthetic. Eight yards at 53-inch width covers approximately 35 square feet, which translates to a pair of armchairs, a small sofa, four dining chairs, or substantial throw pillows with enough left over for a bench cushion — enough yardage to make a statement without committing an entire room to blue batik geometry.
