“An outlet store manager sent me this photo with a job: identify the mystical animal hiding in the pattern, then write a few words for the ad. Their own words: not good at creature identification. This is my first case on that desk.
Identification: dragons. A fleet of them, doing their own carrying. Each boat is one creature, crested head at the prow, scaled body curving into the hull, two robed rowers pulling oars in its back. Birds, palms, blooms, one gabled cottage watching from the shore.
The pattern is China Seas 'Tableau II', purples and lilacs on tinted Belgian linen-cotton. This was the first order through my portrait room and it asked for words, not a portrait. Best review the door could get.”
