Cirebon
Cirebon is a port on the north coast of Java, and for centuries it has been the place where things arrived: Chinese traders, Arab merchants, Islam, porcelain, silk. Its batik shows every one of them. The city's best-known motif, megamendung, is a stack of rolling clouds borrowed from Chinese art, and one of its palaces keeps a ceremonial carriage, the Paksi Naga Liman, that is said to be bird, dragon, and elephant at once, a single beast assembled from three traditions.
The animals on this China Seas print are smaller and less imperial, but they belong to the same school: creatures among vines and flowers, none of them in a hurry. They are handprinted in navy on tinted pure linen, and fifteen yards remain, which is room enough for the whole menagerie to stay together. In a port town, that has always been the point.
