New Chrysanthemum
The chrysanthemum has held more jobs than most flowers. In China it was the flower of autumn and of retirement: the poet Tao Yuanming, who left government service around 405 to farm, wrote one of the most quoted lines in Chinese poetry about picking chrysanthemums by his eastern fence and catching sight of the southern mountain. In Japan it became the emperor's emblem, sixteen petals for the Chrysanthemum Throne. In France, Italy, and Belgium it is the flower carried to the cemetery on All Saints' Day, which makes October its busiest month.
This one has been asked to do something quieter. The standard China Seas green runs close to neon; the designer who commissioned this custom color wanted it faded, as though it had already spent a few summers in a sunny room. Three yards remain, enough for a bench, a pair of pillows, and an early retirement.
