Blue flowers, pink flowers, green leaves, a tinted ground. Cotton chintz, glazed. Twenty-four inches before the garden begins again. All of it printed by hand, one color at a time, at the Rhode Island mill where Quadrille’s most complicated florals were made before it closed to make way for a real estate development.

There are seven yards left.

This would ordinarily be the point at which someone says last chance, perhaps in red letters. Camille finds that sort of thing exhausting.

She has already survived the harder part.

Every color you see required its own screen, its own pass down the printing table, its own registration against the colors that came before it. Human eyes decided whether the blue met the green correctly. Human hands pulled the screens. Then the cloth was glazed, giving the cotton the polished surface that makes chintz catch light differently from ordinary printed fabric.

That process is over. The mill is closed. Camille may be printed again someday, but not this way. These seven yards belong to the hand-printed edition.

Camille does not consider that tragic. Things end. Good rooms remain good rooms.

She would only suggest that seven yards is enough to do something deliberate: a pair of chairs, curtains for the right window, a bed dressed properly, perhaps one very small room in which nobody has felt compelled to explain the concept.
