The eggplant — Solanum melongena — arrived in Europe from India via the Arab trade routes sometime in the 8th century. The Spanish called it alberengena. The French called it aubergine. The English called it "eggplant" because early European varieties were small, white, and oval. The color we now call eggplant — that particular depth of purple-black — has nothing to do with any eggplant anyone has ever seen in a market.

It is a color that named itself after the wrong vegetable and has been living that way ever since, unbothered.

Potalla Outline is Alan Campbell's large-scale floral rendered as pure contour — roses and leaves present only as drawing, not declaration. 49-inch repeat. 27 inches wide. Handprinted in the USA on American paper, in custom eggplant on white.

Five yard minimum. The contour knows where it's going.
