Trellis Outline
This is a trellis with the garden taken out. The full pattern takes more than one screen; this custom run used only the outline, so what remains is the drawing underneath, the bones before the paint. Brown is the right ink for it. For centuries, scribes and artists worked in iron gall ink, which goes down nearly black and slowly oxidizes to brown, so a great many "brown ink" drawings in museums began life black. Some of Bach's manuscripts are reportedly being eaten away by their own ink. This one was printed brown on purpose and has no appetite at all.
Trellis came indoors in America thanks largely to Elsie de Wolfe, often called the country's first professional decorator, who lined the tea room of New York's Colony Club with trelliswork in the early 1900s and turned a ladies' club into a garden pavilion with no garden in it. Twenty-four yards on lightly tinted Belgian linen/cotton is enough to try her trick again: walls, curtains, and a trellis on which nothing will ever need pruning.
