She is correct about all of it. I am the same tree, the same stolen brushstroke translated into a screen repeat and handprinted in America for fifty-five years, but in Jungle Green I am the version Meg Braff put on chairs and the one designers reach for when they want the pattern to feel alive in the room rather than anchoring it. Brown is the library. I am the sunroom. Brown is November. I am the Tuesday in May when you realize the garden has been doing things behind your back.

Five yards of 51-inch pure Belgian linen — enough for a pair of curtain panels that will rewrite the light in whatever room receives them, or a fully upholstered armchair with yardage to spare. Handprinted in the USA on cloth woven in Belgium, which means the flax and the ink come from two continents and meet on a 40-foot table in New Jersey. My repeat is 20½ by 25½ inches. I am one of the most recognized patterns in American textile design, and I am on an outlet shelf at a price that would have made Billy Baldwin laugh out loud. He liked a bargain. He liked nerve even more.
