The paisley motif has traveled so far from home that most people don't even know where home is. They think it's Scottish — named for the town of Paisley, outside Glasgow, where power looms mass-produced imitation Kashmir shawls in the nineteenth century. But the original boteh — that curving, teardrop-shaped floral spray — was Persian before it was Kashmiri, Kashmiri before it was European, and European before it was Scottish. Naming this pattern Bangalore skips past Paisley, Scotland entirely and puts it back on the subcontinent where the form began, in a city that was already a center of silk weaving and textile production centuries before anyone in Glasgow had heard of a jacquard loom. China Seas has always understood provenance.

Bangalore Paisley at a six-inch vertical repeat is the small-scale version — tight, rhythmic, dense enough to read as texture from across a room and as individual paisleys only when you get close. Navy on white on a hundred-percent linen ground, hand screen-printed in the USA on European-woven cloth. This is the paisley that doesn't announce itself. It coordinates, it grounds, it does the quiet structural work that holds a bigger scheme together — the trim pillow next to the statement print, the dining chair seats, the Roman shade in a room where the curtains are doing something louder.
