Home Couture Alhambra — Soft Green / Gray on Ivory 100% Linen

The Alhambra's name means "the red one," for the color of its walls in the Granada sun. But nobody remembers it for the red. They remember what the Nasrid sultans did inside, in the 1300s: plaster carved so finely it reads as lace, arches dissolving into filigree, and courtyards where a still pool and a line of myrtle hedges make a whole palace feel quiet. Washington Irving moved in for a while in 1829 and wrote a book about it. People have been trying to take a piece of it home ever since.

This is the piece that fits. A soft green medallion blooms at the center of each repeat like a courtyard garden, framed in gray tracery that looks carved rather than printed. At arm's length it's intricate; across the room it softens into a pale, cool texture on ivory, the rare large-scale print that calms a room instead of shouting over it.

The repeat is 27.5 inches on 54-inch linen, handprinted in the USA on ground woven in the USA. Thirty-five yards from one dyelot, in two pieces, 23 yards and 12: the long piece does the curtains, the short piece does the bed, and the whole room matches. $118 a yard, against $242 full price. The sultans would have approved of the linen.
