The fanciest column in architecture starts, per Vitruvius, as a weed. On the grave of a girl from Corinth, a votive basket of toys sat under a flat slab, and an acanthus plant grew up through it, leaves curling around the basket's edge. The sculptor Callimachus saw it and went home to carve the first Corinthian capital. Two thousand years of arches copied the result. The weed part got left out.
Corinthe Damask is that origin, repeated: acanthus and scroll mirrored across a 22 by 26 inch repeat, handprinted in Windsor blue on ecru linen. Close up, it is one ambitious plant. Across the room, it is a formal blue damask. The weed got in and stayed.
