Two figures, mid-performance: a musician seated with her instrument, a dancer caught at the exact top of a step — sleeves in motion, one foot raised, the note struck and not yet landed. That is Danse Chinois, and it has been holding this pose since the great age of chinoiserie, when Europe fell in love with an imagined China of pavilions and gardens and set it dancing across toiles. Quadrille's version has the wit the genre demands: the twisted pine, the flowering vine, the little table set for after the music stops.
But this printing is something the pattern itself has never quite been before: aqua. A custom commission — some designer's exact vision, mixed by hand until the eye said yes — that renders the whole performance in water colors: teal for the deep notes, pale aqua for the high ones, white Belgian linen for the silence around the music. The usual chinoiserie palette reads as porcelain; this one reads as lagoon — the dance relocated from the garden to somewhere the tide comes in. It did not exist before this commission and will not exist after this bolt.
Six yards. Let us be exact about six yards, because the trade knows and the rest deserve to: six yards is a pair of extraordinary chairs, a bench and its pillows, a headboard that owns the bedroom, or curtains for the one window that matters. It is not a house; it is a gesture — and gestures, as the dancer herself demonstrates, are the whole art. On 55/45 Belgian linen-cotton, hand-printed in the USA, 52 inches wide, with a 12-by-17 repeat that keeps both performers in frame.
When these six yards go, the music stops for good — this colorway takes its bow and does not return for an encore. The dancer, you'll notice, has been mid-step for two hundred and fifty years. She can wait for the right buyer. The lot number cannot.
