Il Gioco
In Italian, il gioco is the game, but an Italian mechanic uses the same word for something else: the play in a joint, the sliver of slack that lets a hinge swing instead of seizing. Both meanings suit a small print. Johan Huizinga argued in 1938 that play is older than culture, since animals were at it long before anyone wrote down rules, and the Italians have long taken their games seriously. The Game of the Goose, a spiral of sixty-three squares, is said to have been sent by Francesco de' Medici to Philip II of Spain as a royal gift, a printed board doing the work of diplomacy.
The board here is Belgian. Flemish flax was famously retted in the River Lys, which did such good work on it that the Lys earned the nickname the Golden River. Onto that ground, someone in America laid this gray by hand. At a 27-inch repeat, twenty yards meant walking the table and pulling the screen nearly twenty-seven times for each color. Il Gioco can no longer be printed that way. The board is set: twenty continuous yards, all from a single lot, and no rematch.
