Le Cirque opened on East 65th Street in New York in 1974. For the next three decades it was the restaurant where you went when you needed to be seen being somewhere important. Sirio Maccioni ran the room the way a conductor runs an orchestra — with complete authority and the appearance of effortlessness. The famous ate there. The powerful ate there. The people who needed to be seen eating with the famous and powerful ate there and pretended it was accidental.
The pattern named for it has that same quality: sinuous ogee waves in orange, magenta, and chartreuse, outlined in a dotted chain that reads like beadwork or sequins depending on the light. It moves the way a room moves when everyone in it knows they are being watched and has decided to enjoy it.
