Pina - Custom Windsor Blue

Pina is the Quadrille pattern that gets mistaken for something much older than it is. The design has the layered, arched symmetry of a Mughal jali screen — those pierced marble and sandstone lattices that filtered light through the private quarters of the great Indian palaces, where geometry and ornament were the same discipline. Medallions nest inside medallions. Arched forms repeat and recede. The drawing is dense enough that the eye enters it the way you enter a building — through the largest opening first, then noticing the rooms inside the rooms. At twenty-six inches of vertical repeat on fifty-three-inch goods, this is a large-scale pattern that needs space to open up, which is why it reads so well on a dining chair, a headboard, or the kind of high-backed slipper chair where you get the full repeat from shoulder to floor.

Custom Windsor Blue on a tinted linen ground is the colorway that keeps all that complexity quiet. Windsor blue has enough grey in it to sit back — it's cooler and more reserved than turquoise, less obvious than navy — and the tinted ground warms the whole composition so it doesn't go clinical. On a hundred-percent linen, hand-printed in the USA on Belgian-woven cloth, the ink sits slightly into the fiber rather than on top of it, which gives the pattern the quality of something revealed rather than applied. Five yards. Enough for the one chair that changes everything else in the room — which, if you look at the photograph, is exactly what happened.
