My name has the word "Background" in it, and I have made my peace with that. More than peace. Do you know what the background is? It is the part of the room that is still there after everyone goes home.

My cousin Sigourney wears the same Jungle Green and arrives like a thunderclap. Good for her. I come from a quieter tradition: people in the far north who painted flowers on their walls because the winters were long and the light was short, and they wanted something growing indoors in January. I am that impulse, handprinted in the USA on Belgian linen. I repeat every eighteen inches, like a good habit.
