Jacaranda
I was painted before I was printed — and you can tell. Someone sat down with brushes and pigment and invented me: these massive, impossible flowers in magenta and saffron and viridian, erupting across sky blue the way jacaranda blossoms take over a street in Los Angeles in May, so profligate it looks like the trees are showing off. Which they are. Which I am. My name comes from the Tupi-Guaraní — yakaranda, meaning hard wood — but there is nothing hard about me. I am 50% cotton, 50% linen, woven in Europe and handprinted in America on a 40-foot table by someone who had to walk my 34-inch horizontal repeat without flinching. Every passage of that screen was an act of nerve. You’re looking at the proof.
One yard. That’s what exists of me in this colorway, in this lot, at this price, on this planet. One yard of 54-inch hand-screened cloth is enough for a pair of pillows that will own every room they enter, or a single panel framed like the painting I started as. My repeat is 24 inches vertical, 34 horizontal — I was designed to command scale, and at one yard I am commanding scarcity instead. The designer who finds me will know exactly what to do. The one who hesitates will describe me to someone at a dinner party six months from now, and the someone will say why didn’t you buy it, and there will be no good answer.
