I was named after a man who wrote operas about women who die beautifully, which I mention only because people keep expecting me to be romantic. I come in Lavender. I come in Light Pink. Those are the Puccinis who cry at the opera and bring tissues in their handbag. I am the one who came in Slate.
Slate is not gray. Gray is the color of indecision, of conference rooms, of the answer "maybe." Slate is the color of the stone they pull from Welsh quarries and split along its cleavage plane — the color that happens when the earth has been under pressure for four hundred million years and has opinions about it. I am that gray. The one with a history.
My pattern is the same as my siblings' — the same scrolling, interlocking motif that looks, depending on your mood, like ironwork or embroidery or the doodles of a very talented person trapped in a very long meeting. But in Slate on Tint, the ornament stops being decorative and starts being architectural. I am the Puccini for the room that doesn't need to be charming. The room that already knows what it is.
I belong to a family — Veneto, Carlo, Volpi, and me — the washed damask coordinates that Quadrille named after Italy and printed on Belgian linen, because this company has never met a transatlantic collaboration it didn't enjoy. My cousins are palazzo intrigue and masked balls. I am the morning after. Ten yards at 52 inches wide, with a four-inch repeat that tiles like mathematics. Which it is.
