MAZE REVERSE 2 COLORS — Custom Spring Green / Dark Green on Tinted Belgian Linen/Cotton

The Greeks had a word for it — actually, they had a river for it. The Maeander, in what is now Turkey, wound so extravagantly through its valley that its name became our word for wandering, and its bends became the key pattern marching around a thousand vases. China Seas' Maze Reverse takes that ancient squiggle, stands it on its elbows, and interlocks it into a fretwork of two greens: spring green for the new growth, dark green for the hedge that has seen things. The "Reverse" is the clever part — the design is printed as open line-work, letting the tinted Belgian linen/cotton ground do the filling-in, the way a hedge maze is mostly air arranged by boxwood.

Up close it is all right angles and confident forty-five-degree turns, and — we checked — no dead ends anywhere. The cells read as pure geometry at arm's length and as an aerial photograph of a very orderly garden from across the room. The repeat is generous (30.5 inches down, 54 across), so the pattern strolls rather than marches, and the two greens overlap like the same path walked in two different seasons. On the tinted ground, the whole thing sits warm and settled: a geometric with the manners of a neutral.

A geometric is the diplomat of the pattern world — it gets along with florals, flatters stripes, calms chintz, and is perfectly happy in a room containing nothing but books. This one will do curtains, a headboard, a bench cushion, or — and we say this with admiration — an extremely good pair of lounge pants. At $92 against the $218 full price, the only wrong turn available is not buying it.
