Deauville is the town on the Normandy coast where Parisians have gone since 1862 to be casual very formally — the boardwalk, the parasols, Chanel's first shop. Alan Campbell caught the whole performance in one zigzag: a navy flame-stitch that reads nautical without resorting to a single rope, anchor, or regrettable lighthouse. It is the most disciplined way to be relaxed that we print. The chevron does the work stripes wish they could — it moves, it flickers, it makes a dining chair look like it summers well. Nine yards exist in this lot. That's two chairs and a bench, or one settee that will outrank everything else in the room. The town has been fashionable for 164 years; the pattern's been fashionable since Alan drew it; neither is showing any sign of stopping.
