In September 1940, four teenagers and a dog named Robot fell through a hole in the Dordogne and discovered that seventeen thousand years ago, someone had already solved the fundamental problem of interior decoration: the right mark, at the right scale, on the right surface. The cave was closed to visitors in 1963 because human breath was destroying what human hands had made — which tells you everything about the relationship between art and proximity. Alan Campbell's Lascaux doesn't reproduce the bulls or the swimming deer. It captures what came before the subject: the arm in motion, the pure nerve of putting pigment to surface for the first time, the moment before representation became a word.
