China Seas Fabric: Bali II - Custom Denim Blue on White Lightweight Linen / Cotton

Bali II takes the peacock — an animal that has survived several thousand years of decorative overuse with its dignity more or less intact — and dissolves it into ikat. The forms are abstract enough that you see plumage, not birds: fanned tails and arched crests softened by the deliberate bleed that wax-resist dyeing produces in Balinese and Javanese cloth. China Seas hand-screens this onto lightweight Belgian linen-cotton at a scale large enough to read as wallpaper but structured enough to upholster, and the 25-inch vertical repeat means the motifs have room to open up across a cushion or a Roman shade without being interrupted mid-feather. Three yards at 47" is a pair of curtain panels for a small window or a set of pillows generous enough to mean it.

Custom Denim Blue on White is the colorway that does what actual denim does — it looks better with age and light. The blue is not navy, not cobalt, not any blue that has been pushed toward intensity; it's the soft, slightly faded tone of indigo that has been washed once and left in the sun, closer to memory than to pigment. Against the white ground it floats rather than prints, and the peacock forms emerge and recede like something seen through muslin.
