China Seas Fabric: Fez Background - Custom Zibby Blue on White Belgian Linen / Cotton

The artisans of Fez have been cutting eight-pointed stars and interlocking geometries into zellige tilework since the Marinid dynasty brought the craft from Andalusia in the thirteenth century. What reads as "background" in this pattern is actually the figure — the negative space between stars becoming its own lattice, the way a Moroccan courtyard reveals its structure only after you stop looking at the fountain. China Seas translated this into a hand-screened print sometime before 1985; this particular strike is Zibby Blue, a colorway we cannot explain but can confirm is the precise blue of a swimming pool at 4pm in Palm Springs.

Two yards at 49" is a considered purchase: a pair of substantial pillows, a Roman shade for a powder room window, the facing on a headboard, or — if you are clever with your cutting — a small slipper chair seat. The Belgian linen-cotton ground takes the ink cleanly without drowning the geometry. This is not a statement fabric; it is a fabric that makes other statements coherent.
