For eleven hundred years the fez insisted on exactly one color. Red, and only red, made in exactly one city — Fez, Morocco, which also happened to build the world’s oldest continuously operating university three centuries before Oxford existed, and which remained the hat’s sole manufacturer clear into the 1800s. The shape survived dynasties, outlasted the sultans who wore it, had a strange second life as Ottoman fashion — and was then banned outright in Turkey in 1925, on Atatürk’s orders, as too old a world to carry into a new one. It never quite forgave that, this pattern insists, though another pattern mentioned — secondhand, so take it as you will — that the objection was really to hats in general and nothing personal. Quadrille’s Fez doesn’t reproduce the hat. It takes the one shape history spent a thousand years telling what color to be, and finally lets it choose for itself: camel!
