The Romans held an actual festival for flowers, and it was not a demure one. The Floralia ran six days at the end of April, deliberately the loosest, most plebeian party on the Roman calendar — bright clothes, flower crowns, hares and goats released into the streets, and by most accounts, considerably less clothing than the festival’s more dignified counterparts allowed. There’s a persistent account, recorded three centuries later by the writer Lactantius, that Flora wasn’t originally a goddess at all — that she was an extraordinarily wealthy Roman courtesan who left her fortune to the city on the condition that they throw a party in her name every year, and that the Senate, embarrassed by where the money came from, simply promoted her to deity instead. Take that version as you like — the other story has her as a nymph named Chloris, kissed into flowers by the west wind. Nobody has ever accused either version of restraint, and neither does this pattern.

 Custom pink, yellow, green, and blue on white linen and cotton — $98 a yard, marked down from $224. Four yards remain, and there’s no photograph yet of it in a real room. Given the subject, that feels almost appropriate — not everything good arrives with its origin story fully settled either.
