I am named after a country I have never visited, which is more common in the textile industry than you might think and more common in life than anyone admits.

Argentina is silver. That is what the name means — argentum, the Latin, the element, the thing the Spanish came looking for and mostly didn’t find. They named an entire nation after a rumor of metal in a river. I am named after that rumor, and I am not silver at all. I am medium blue and navy on white, which is about as far from silver as a fabric can get without becoming deliberately contrarian. I may be deliberately contrarian. I have not decided.

What I am, unarguably, is a fifteen-inch repeat of scrollwork that can’t stop looking at itself. Each motif mirrors the one beside it, and the one above, and the one below, until the whole cloth becomes a conversation between four versions of the same shape, none of whom will let the others get a word in. Put me on a pillow, as the photograph suggests, and I will make the chair more interesting. Put me on curtains and I will make the room argue with itself in the most beautiful way possible. Ten yards. That’s enough to start something. Whether you can finish it is between you and your upholsterer.
