St Jean Stripe — Custom French Blue on Tint

There are over four hundred places in France named Saint-Jean, because the French have never met a Baptist they couldn’t name a village after. The pattern doesn’t specify which one, and it doesn’t need to — the triangles marching in imperfect rows across this linen-cotton ground aren’t cartography, they’re mood. They look like the pennants strung across a village square on a fête day, or like sails in a harbor seen from a hill, or like the moment a stripe decides to stop being well-behaved and starts being interesting. Alan Campbell understood that a geometric doesn’t have to be rigid to be precise. These triangles are hand-drawn, hand-printed, and slightly drunk on being French blue, which is the color of shutters on limestone and tablecloths at lunch and the last fifteen minutes before the sun drops behind the Pyrenees.

Fourteen yards at outlet price, 47.5” wide with a 37 7/8” repeat on a 55/45 Belgian linen-cotton that will make you wonder why anyone prints on anything else. Enough for a pair of curtain panels or a headboard with pillows to match. The tinted ground means it plays warm — it wants wood, it wants brass, it wants a room that looks like someone actually lives there.
