Tropique Multi Blotch - Custom Multi Blues/Turquoise

Blotch printing arrived in the 1920s as a way to get painterly effects without painterly labor — essentially a controlled accident, where the printer sets up overlapping screens in slightly misregistered colors and lets them blur at the edges, creating soft transitions instead of hard boundaries. The technique suited tropical botanicals particularly well because real hibiscus petals don't have crisp edges either; they fade from deep color at the throat to pale translucence at the rim, and blotch printing captures that gradient in a way flat-color screen printing never could. Tropique Multi Blotch takes full advantage of the method: overlapping hibiscus blooms and broad tropical leaves rendered in multiple blues that shift from navy to turquoise to pale aqua, all bleeding into each other the way watercolor does on wet paper. The 15-inch repeat is scaled for upholstery — these are chair-sized flowers, statement blooms big enough to read from across a room but not so large they become cartoonish. Printed on Belgian linen-cotton ground (55% linen for body, 45% cotton for workability), the fabric has the weight and hand for serious upholstery work while the linen content gives it the slight slub and texture that keeps botanical prints from looking too flat or synthetic.

Blues and turquoise on natural tint is every 1950s American suburb's idea of tropical sophistication — the colorway Dorothy Draper deployed at the Greenbrier when she wanted West Virginia to feel like the Caribbean, the palette that showed up on bamboo furniture in ranch houses from Pasadena to Palm Beach once postwar prosperity made "exotic" accessible to the middle class. Here it's navy as the deepest shadow, turquoise as the mid-tone, pale aqua as the highlight, all printed on a natural linen-cotton ground that reads as warm cream rather than stark white. The effect is cooling without being cold — this is tropical water, not arctic ice. We have two lots available: 2.50 yards from lot J43079 B and 1.50 yards from lot J41900 B, enough combined for a pair of substantial chairs (think barrel-back or wing chairs with cushions), or kept separate, one lot covers a generous ottoman while the other does a slipper chair. For fabric this unapologetically mid-century in its tropical optimism, that's a complete room refresh at outlet pricing — the kind of yardage that turns rattan furniture from thrift-store find into deliberate design statement.
