I am not the background.
I know what the name implies. Lyford Background - as if I exist to support something else, to recede, to provide context for a more important pattern. This is incorrect. A 49-inch vertical repeat does not recede. Pagodas and palm trees and flowering branches and figures in silhouette, all rendered in dark turquoise on white Suncloth, do not provide context. They are the context. Everything else in the room organizes itself around what I'm doing.
China Seas has been printing me since the days when Chinoiserie was not a trend but a worldview - the West's long love affair with an imagined East, rendered in ink and dye and longing. I am that tradition on 100% acrylic American-woven ground, which means I survive weather. The pagodas don't mind rain.
Handprinted in the USA. Outdoors-ready. The timeless part is true. The "background" part was always a misunderstanding.
