Everything that makes Pina work in Windsor Blue — the nested medallions, the jali-screen geometry, the way the eye enters the pattern through the largest opening and keeps finding smaller rooms inside — shifts temperature entirely in terracotta. Blue Pina is a library in winter. Terracotta Pina is a courtyard in August. The color has the particular warmth of sun-baked clay, of Rajasthani plaster walls, of the earth-toned pigments that Indian and Persian artisans have been grinding and painting with since before anyone thought to write down the recipes. On a tinted linen ground, the terracotta doesn't sit on top of the cloth — it sinks in, the way a stain does, which gives the whole pattern the quality of something excavated rather than manufactured.
