Meloire Reverse — Custom Camel II on White Belgian Linen / Cotton

Meloire is not quite moiré, not quite the Loire, and—despite persistent rumors—not a minor character omitted from The Three Musketeers.

It is instead a field of wandering concentric lines: part fingerprint, part tree ring, part topographic survey of a place no cartographer has been willing to claim. The pattern appears orderly until one follows any individual line, at which point it becomes clear that everyone is improvising.

Then there is Custom Camel II.

The “II” suggests that an earlier camel was consulted and found insufficient.

Against the white Belgian linen/cotton ground, the color reads less like desert transportation and more like tobacco, cinnamon, old leather, café au lait, or the excellent brown outline in a mid-century drawing. Another pattern told us the camel itself requested a warmer neutral and final approval rights, but negotiations have stalled.

Meloire Reverse is graphic without being severe and neutral without becoming invisible. It works particularly well with blue, turquoise, orange, wicker, dark wood, and rooms where one sensible solid fabric has already begun asking for reinforcements.

No one can explain the name.

Fortunately, the fabric does not require an explanation.
