Look close and the drawing gets better: each boteh isn’t outlined so much as assembled — hundreds of tiny petal-shaped tesserae in three or four blues, packed like a mosaic floor or a riverbed of pebbles, with sprigged flowers filling every gap between the big forms. From across the room it reads as a serene blue paisley; at arm’s length it dissolves into thousands of small decisions, which is exactly the pleasure of hand screen printing — somebody made all of them. The multi-blues run from Delft to midnight on a tinted ground, meaning it sits as happily with brown furniture and brass as it does with white slipcovers and a view of water.
